2×6 Construction: Saving Energy and Money For the Homebuyer

Winter is just about upon us and here in the Boston, Massachusetts area a common thought is crossing the mind of every homeowner: how much is it going to cost me to heat my home this Winter?

As a builder of new high-end, luxury homes I understand that our customers expect the most efficient homes possible.  If you are willing to pay millions of dollars for a luxurious dream home than you do not want to shell out extra money each month to the Energy companies to compensate for the improper insulation of your home.

This is why here at the Preserve at Keeney Pond in Norfolk, MA we use 2×6 construction on the exterior walls of our homes.  Using 2×6 construction as opposed to 2×4 construction offers many different benefits to the homebuyer.  One of the most important benefits is that the extra two inches of wall depth allow for an extra 2 inches of insulation throughout the home’s exterior walls.   Also, although not required by the Massachusetts State Building Code, we use a special vapor barrier between the insulation and the drywall that acts as a second line of defense against the cold.  This can prove to be a major benefit on those frigid, windy days that a New England Winter can bring.   When you are building a new, luxury home like 6 Keeney Pond Road that offers extensive window packages, two story foyers and great rooms, and an overall open floor plan, proper insulation is crucial.  This is why the extra costs of 2×6 construction, vapor barriers, extra attic insulation and using only the best insulation techniques and materials are worth every penny.  The extra costs in the beginning save our homebuyers money in the end.  2×6 construction and proper insulation are just a few of the ways we ensure that our customers are getting the best homes possible.

Below is a simple diagram outlining the benefit of using 2×6 wall construction as opposed to 2×4 wall construction when it comes to proper insulation.

You do not have to have a PhD in math to realize a 2x6 wall cavity has lots more insulation space than that of a 2x4 wall cavity.
